Colour separation

Colour separation is when a colour image is separated into four different colours by using filters and screens.  This will result in four separate images of different colours transferred onto printing plates steadily printed on a printing press.  CMYK process printing is universally used in graphic art and commercial large format printing.

Screening/halftoning

This is the process that represents lighter shades as small dots rather than solid areas of ink.  In colour printing, the screened images for each colour are printed in succession.  The screen grids are then set at different angles and under a magnifying glass you can see the tiny rosettes created by the dots.  Halftoning is the printing of all the primary colours in a pattern small enough to perceive a solid colour.
